"This undergraduate thesis entitled “Hashtags as a Tool of Political Communication (A Case Study of #IndonesiaGelap)” aims to examine how the #IndonesiaGelap hashtag was formed by users on social media platform X, and how it functions as a form of political communication that challenges the government’s official narrative. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with two active X users and observation of online activities related to the hashtag. The findings show that #IndonesiaGelap emerged organically as an accumulation of public frustration toward economic, social, and political issues in Indonesia. Its spread was spontaneous, driven by digital solidarity and the algorithmic dynamics of platform X. The hashtag serves as a digital public sphere that allows citizens to express criticism, shape opinions, and reinterpret state narratives. Moreover, #IndonesiaGelap symbolizes a collective resistance against government slogans such as “Bright Indonesia” or “Golden Indonesia 2045.” This research concludes that social media platforms have transformed into arenas of digital democracy, enabling participatory political communication and amplifying the voice of the public.\r\nKeywords: Political Communication, Social Media, Hashtag, #IndonesiaGelap, Digital Participation."^^ .
