description: This study aims to analyze the role of gender in patriarchal culture among the Batak Toba tribe, particularly in Punguan Pasaribu. The focus of this study is to determine how the patriarchal system among the Batak Toba tribe in Punguan Pasaribu relates to the division of roles between men and women in the domestic and public spheres. This study uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach by finding knowledge or theories from previous studies such as books or journals. The data collected in this study were obtained through pre-observation, in-depth interviews, direct observation, literature study, and documentation of Punguan Pasaribu members.  The results of the study show that patriarchal culture still plays a strong role in the social structure of the Batak Toba community. Men are positioned as the head of the family, the main decision maker, and the heir to the clan, while women tend to play a role in the domestic sphere and have a subordinate position. However, there are noticeable changes in that Batak Toba women today are beginning to play an active role in the public sphere, for example through education and contributions to social activities. Although this is still difficult to achieve due to cultural norms and strong traditional values that have been passed down from generation to generation.
