Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan Penelitian dan Pengembangan (Research and Development) dengan model pengembangan 4D yang terdiri atas tahapan Define, Design, Develop, dan Disseminate. Subjek penelitian adalah 32 siswa kelas XI TPL SMKN 2 Kota Serang, satu validator ahli media, dan satu validator ahli materi. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui angket validasi ahli, angket respon siswa, lembar observasi keaktifan, serta soal pretest dan posttest. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa buku ajar memiliki karakteristik yang dirancang berdasarkan SKKNI, Capaian Pembelajaran, Tujuan Pembelajaran dan disusun secara sistematis dengan pendekatan Problem Based Learning (PBL), dilengkapi dengan WPS, run sheet, job sheet, dan rubrik penilaian visual yang mampu mendorong keterlibatan aktif serta kemampuan berpikir siswa. Tingkat kelayakan buku ajar dikategorikan cukup layak berdasarkan hasil validasi ahli media dengan persentase 64%, ahli materi mengkategorikan sangat layak dengan persentase 94%, dan respon siswa terhadap buku ajar sangat baik dengan persentase 83%. Hasil uji N-Gain menunjukkan peningkatan kemampuan kognitif siswa dengan skor 0,6 (kategori sedang) dan cukup efektif dengan persentase 60% dan keaktifan siswa dikategorikan sangat aktif dengan persentase 76%. Dengan demikian, Buku Ajar Pengelasan SMAW layak digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran yang efektif dalam meningkatkan keaktifan dan kemampuan kognitif siswa. Kata kunci: Pengelasan SMAW, Buku Ajar, Keaktifan, Kemampuan Kognitif abstract: This study aims to: (1) develop a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Textbook that can enhance student engagement and cognitive abilities; (2) determine the feasibility level of the developed SMAW Textbook; and (3) assess student engagement and cognitive abilities after using the SMAW Textbook. This research employs a Research and Development (R\&D) method using the 4D development model, which consists of the stages Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. The research subjects include 32 students of class XI TPL at SMKN 2 Kota Serang, one media expert validator, and one material expert validator. Data collection techniques include expert validation questionnaires, student response questionnaires, student engagement observation sheets, as well as pretest and posttest assessments. The results show that the textbook is characterized by content based on the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI), Learning Outcomes, and Learning Objectives, and is systematically arranged using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. It is equipped with a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), run sheets, job sheets, and visual assessment rubrics that encourage active involvement and students’ critical thinking skills. The feasibility of the textbook is categorized as fairly feasible by the media expert with a percentage of 64%, and as highly feasible by the material expert with a percentage of 94%. Student responses to the textbook are categorized as very good with a percentage of 83%. The N-Gain test results indicate an increase in students’ cognitive abilities with a score of 0.6 (moderate category) and a sufficient effectiveness level of 60%, while student engagement is categorized as very active with a percentage of 76%. Therefore, the SMAW Textbook is considered appropriate for use as an effective learning medium to enhance student engagement and cognitive abilities.
