This study aims to validate the role of Problem-Based Learning (EPBL) on students' cognitive load in solving complex mathematical problems and the impact of implementing EPBL on student learning. This study used a mixed methods approach. The research design was concurrent triangulation. The subjects used in this study were one class of 8 at SMP Negeri 14 Serang City with a total of 36 students. Quantitative data processing used paired t-test statistical calculations, while qualitative data processing used a case study and interview approach. Interview data processing used thematic analysis. The results showed that (1) there was an increase in student abilities, with an average difference of 28.89. (2) the implementation of EPBL was able to reduce students' cognitive load in solving complex mathematical problems based on the results of the cognitive load questionnaire average comparison, with a difference of 33.25.
