This study aimed to explore the most influential language learning strategies used by a Spelling Bee competition winner in the English Youth Competition 2022. Framed by Oxford’s (1990) classification of language learning strategies and using a narrative inquiry approach, the study focused on how selected strategies supported the participant’s vocabulary development. Data were collected through an in-depth interview and analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that although various strategies were applied, three were perceived as the most effective: memory, cognitive, and social strategies. Memory strategies were used through dictionary-based learning, storytelling, and visual cues. Cognitive strategies were reflected in daily English interaction within an immersive program, while social strategies involved consistent vocabulary practice with a peer. These strategies worked in combination and contributed significantly to the participant’s language acquisition and competition performance. The study suggests that the purposeful and consistent application of language learning strategies can enhance learners’ vocabulary mastery and language confidence in both academic and competitive settings. date: 2025-07-21 date_type: published pages: 76 institution: Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa department: Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris thesis_type: sarjana thesis_name: sarjana referencetext: Afiase, D.R., Nugroho, A.D., Karjono, J.
