"Visually impaired individuals often face mobility challenges, such as colliding with undetected objects or getting lost, even when using conventional white canes. This occurs due to the limitations of standard canes in detecting nearby obstacles, as well as environmental conditions that are not fully accessible—such as the absence of guiding paths. One such case was experienced by F, a visually impaired person who struggles to navigate their residential area due to the lack of specialized tactile pathways. With the advancement of technology, the use of the Arduino Uno R3 microcontroller and HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor offers a potential solution to enhance the functionality of traditional canes. The sensor is designed to detect objects in front of, to the left, and to the right of the user. When an obstacle is detected, the sensor sends a signal to a buzzer, which emits an alert sound to inform the user so that the obstacle can be avoided. This research aims to: (1) design and develop a modified smart cane for the visually impaired using Arduino Uno and ultrasonic sensors; (2) understand the software development process on the Arduino Uno platform for the system; (3) determine the effectiveness of the tool in detecting environmental obstacles. The method used in this research is the Waterfall model, a systematic and sequential approach in system development that includes stages such as user requirement analysis, planning, modeling, construction, and system deployment, followed by maintenance and evaluation. Testing was carried out by involving four visually impaired respondents. The evaluation results, analyzed using a Likert scale-based assessment instrument, showed an average score of 0.8075, which falls under the “fairly valid” category according to the validity criteria. Therefore, it can be concluded that the modified smart cane for the visually impaired based on Arduino Uno and ultrasonic sensors is considered fairly effective for daily use.
