description: One form of literacy development is the emergence of various literacy-based  communities, as reflected in the Literacy Development Index of the Jakarta  community, measured by the Jakarta Library and Archives Office (Dispusip DKI  Jakarta). One such community is Komunitas Baca Bareng or Silent Book Club  Jakarta, which is among many growing literacy communities, especially in Jakarta.  What makes this community unique is its activity: members read silently together  without any session for introductions or discussions afterward. This is different from  most literacy communities, which usually begin or end with book discussions or  social interactions.Using a qualitative approach and the ethnography of  communication method, this study aims to explore the communication patterns  within the community and how social bonds are formed despite minimal verbal  interaction. The study adopts a constructivist paradigm, using Symbolic Interaction  Theory and FIRO Theory to understand the motivations behind members’  participation. Data were collected through observations and interviews with  community participants. The findings show a unique communication pattern where  interaction is optional. The silent reading experience itself fulfills the interpersonal  needs of participants and fosters a meaningful sense of togetherness. This study  highlights how meaningful social connection can emerge from nonverbal and  minimal interaction through shared activity.
