Film Good Will Hunting merupakan suatu film yang mengangkat isu kesehatan mental dan penyembuhan trauma bagi penyitasnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis semiotika Roland Barthes untuk menganalisis representasi penyembuhan trauma dengan mengungkap makna denotasi dan konotasi dalam simbol, dialog dan visual dalam interaksi terapeutik antara karakter Will Hunting dan Sean Maguire. Metode
penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan analisis semiotika untuk mengidentifikasi tanda-tanda verbal dan nonverbal dalam adegan kunci film. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa komunikasi terapeutik di film ini direpresentasikan melalui empat fase, yakni, orientasi, identifikasi, eksplorasi dan resolusi. Prinsip-prinsip komunikasi terapeutik seperti empati, keterbukaan, validasi emosi dan penghargaan menjadi kunci keberhasilan terapi. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi pada pemahaman tentang peran komunikasi terapeutik dalam penyembuhan trauma serta bagaimana media film dapat menjadi media
edukasi yang efektif untuk isu kesehatan mental. Temuan ini menjadi relevan bagi pengembangan pendakatan komunikasi yang empatik pada penyitas trauma.

medium that conveys social issues to the public. Good Will Hunting is a film that
explores themes of mental health and trauma recovery among survivors. This study
employs Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis to examine the representation of trauma
healing by uncovering both denotative and connotative meanings embedded in
symbols, dialogues, and visual elements within the therapeutic interactions between
the characters Will Hunting and Sean Maguire. A descriptive qualitative method is
utilized, incorporating semiotic analysis to identify verbal and non-verbal signs in
key scenes of the film. The findings indicate that therapeutic communication in the
film is depicted through four phases: orientation, identification, exploration, and
resolution. Core principles of therapeutic communication—such as empathy,
openness, emotional validation, and respect—emerge as essential components
contributing to the effectiveness of the therapy. This research offers insights into
the role of therapeutic communication in trauma recovery and highlights the
potential of film as an effective medium for mental health education. These findings
hold relevance for the development of empathetic communication approaches in
addressing the needs of trauma survivors.
