The background of this study is based on the low ability of students to understand mathematical concepts and solve mathematical problems independently, as reflected in the results of national assessments and observations in class VII MTs MII Cidangiang. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The subjects of the study were students of class VII B MTs MII Cidangiang Pandeglang in the 2024/2025 academic year who were selected through purposive sampling techniques. The instruments used included conceptual understanding tests, mathematical problem-solving tests, in-depth interviews, and participatory observations. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's analysis techniques, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that most students were in the moderate category in terms of conceptual understanding and mathematical problem-solving abilities. Students with high conceptual understanding tend to have high mathematical problem-solving abilities as well, which indicates a close relationship between the two abilities. Problem-based learning has been proven to provide space for students to construct understanding independently and improve critical thinking skills.
