description: Trade has been one of the main pillars in building civilizations since ancient times. As one of the main trading centers in Southeast Asia, the city of Banten had a strategic pasition that allowed for intensive interaction between local and foreign traders. This research aims to unsderstand the socio-economic policies of Sultan Abul Mafakhir Mahmud Abdul Kadir (1624-1651 AD) in supporting the development of international trade and its impact on the formation of a cosmopolitan society in the city of Banten in the 16 th-17 th centuries AD. The research method used is the historical method, including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were obtained from various primary and secondary sources. The theory used in this research is the theory of comparative advantage, whic was introduced by the British economist David Ricardo through his book Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817). The results of the research show that during his reign, Sultan Abul Mafakhir Mahmud Abdul Kadir (1624-1651 AD) implemented progressive policies such as reopening trade relations with foreign traders, increasing main production such as pepper and introducing sugar as a new trading commodity in Banten, as well as opening agricultural lands, building irrigation and rice granaries. These policies not only strengthened the economy of the Banten Sultanate, but also created space for cultural interaction that resulted in a tolerant and inclusive cosmopolitan society, making it one of the cities of Islamic civilization in the archipelago.
