The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model with cooperative learning type Think Pair Share (TPS) in improving the communication skills of junior high school students conducted in class IX of SMP Negeri 13 Kota Serang. This type of research is an experimental study with a non-equivalent pretest posttest control group design. The sample in this study was taken using the cluster random sampling technique in a population with 30 students in the experimental class and 30 students in the control class. The results of this study are evidenced by the results mean of the n-gain score of 0.8068 with a high category. Then the normality test with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test on the pretest and posttest data is seen from the normality test obtained, namely if the significance value is 0.086 > 0.05 then the data in the pretest is normal. While the posttest results are significance 0.127 > 0.05 including normal. Then an independent sample t-test was conducted with a significance value of 0.418 (H0 is accepted) which means there is a significant difference between the pretest scores of the experimental class and the control class. Furthermore, to answer the formulated hypothesis, a hypothesis test was conducted. The hypothesis test used in this study was the independent sample t-test with a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05, which means H0 was rejected. The results of the effect size test obtained a result of 1.108 which is categorized as high.
