description: PPN Karangantu, as a major capture fisheries center in Banten, faces the issue of microplastic pollution in its waters, which may threaten seafood safety. This study aims to determine the abundance and types of microplastics in green mussels (Perna viridis) and blood clams (Anadara granosa) marketed in the area, as specific data on microplastic contamination in these commodities was lacking. Samples were randomly collected from vendors and analyzed using a stereo microscope for visual microplastic observation and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to identify polymer types. The results revealed three main microplastic forms: fragments, fibers, and films, with the highest abundance of fragments found in green mussels (25.6 particles/individual) and films in blood clams (8.4 particles/individual). FTIR identified nine polymer types, including Polycarbonate, Nylon, and Low Density Polyethylene. These findings indicate that fishing and seafood trading activities at PPN Karangantu contribute to the accumulation of microplastics in seafood consumed by the community, posing potential health risks and highlighting the urgent need for plastic waste management in the area.
