Interpersonal communication, as a \r\ncrucial part of social interaction, plays a central role in resolving conflicts. \r\nHowever, many students prefer silent treatment despite having adequate academic \r\nbackgrounds to communicate effectively. This study employs Heider's (1958) and \r\nKelley's (1967) attribution theories to analyze the motives, intentions, and \r\nbehavioral patterns of silent treatment based on the dimensions of distinctiveness, \r\nconsensus, and consistency. The findings reveal that silent treatment is influenced \r\nby internal factors, such as the emotional characteristics of the individual, and \r\nexternal factors, including situational pressures like distance, meeting intensity, \r\nand differing schedules. Low distinctiveness was observed in informants who \r\nconsistently used silent treatment, whereas high distinctiveness appeared among \r\nthose who employed this strategy only in specific situations. Consensus varied; \r\nsome informants perceived silent treatment as a common behavior, while others \r\nconsidered it a deviation. In terms of consistency, most couples exhibited stable \r\npatterns of using silent treatment to avoid conflict escalation. This study concludes \r\nthat silent treatment serves as an adaptive strategy frequently used in long-distance \r\nrelationships, although it has negative impacts, such as increasing anxiety and \r\nreducing relationship satisfaction.
