%X Abusive relationships are relationships filled with violence, whether in the form of physical, emotional, or sexual violence. In the household, abusive relationships are better known as domestic violence (KDRT). Although it is not unfamiliar, this phenomenon is likened to an iceberg where the problems seen in society are small tips and it takes a lot of effort to overcome them. This research was conducted on one of the documentary series directed by Nanette Burstein, Killer Sally. This series was chosen because the representation of Sally McNeil is very different from the representation of victims of violence in general, and illustrates how the chain of violence is created in a relationship. This research uses a qualitative approach, constructivism paradigm, and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method. In addition to using semiotic analysis, this research is also strengthened by Judee K. Burgoon's theory of violation of expectations (EVT) and Peter L. Berger's theory of social construction. The results obtained from this study indicate that the abusive relationship in the Killer Sally documentary series clearly depicts a violent relationship through a collection of photos and recordings, narratives that are constructed, and sources who convey their points of view. The denotative meaning of abusive relationships that is depicted is that the violence that occurs in relationships is very broad and diverse. The connotative meaning is that victims of violence find it difficult to get out of the relationship mentally and socially. The mythical meaning is that the patriarchal system places men in a higher position, thus creating inequality.
%Z Abusive relationship merupakan hubungan yang dipenuhi dengan kekerasan, baik berupa kekerasan fisik, emosional, ataupun seksual. Dalam lingkup rumah tangga, abusive relationship lebih dikenal dengan kekerasan dalam rumah tangga (KDRT). Meskipun tidak asing terdengar, fenomena ini diibaratkan sebagai gunung es dimana permasalahan yang terlihat di masyarakat merupakan ujung-ujung kecil dan dibutuhkan banyak usaha untuk mengatasinya. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada salah satu series dokumenter yang disutradarai oleh Nanette Burstein yaitu Killer Sally. Series ini dipilih karena representasi Sally McNeil sangat berbeda dengan representasi korban kekerasan pada umumnya, serta menggambarkan bagaimana rantai kekerasan tercipta dalam suatu hubungan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, paradigma konstruktivisme, dan metode analisis semiotika Roland Barthes. Selain menggunakan analisis semiotika, penelitian ini juga diperkuat oleh teori pelanggaran harapan (EVT) Judee K.Burgoon dan teori konstruksi sosial Peter L. Berger. Hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa abusive relationship dalam series dokumenter Killer Sally menggambarkan secara jelas gambaran hubungan yang penuh kekerasan lewat kumpulan foto dan rekaman, narasi yang dibangun, serta narasumber yang menyampaikan sudut pandangnya. Adapun makna denotasi abusive relationship yang tergambar adalah kekerasan yang terjadi dalam hubungan sangatlah luas dan beragam. Makna konotasi berupa korban kekerasan sulit untuk keluar dari hubungan tersebut secara mental maupun sosial. Makna mitos berupa sistem patriarki menempatkan posisi laki-laki lebih tinggi sehingga menimbulkan kesenjangan.
