Metallurgy description: The continuous increase in global demand for aluminum, particularly in the transportation, packaging, and construction sectors, results in the generation of approximately 120 million tons of red mud annually. In Indonesia, about 1,75 million tons of red mud were generated in 2020. This waste material contains various valuable elements, classifying it as a potential raw material. Notably, the iron content within red mud can be utilized as a source for iron and steel making. Given the rising domestic demand for steel, this presents a significant opportunity for local steel manufacturers. This study investigates the reduction roasting process of red mud to evaluate the effects of different reductant dosages, the addition of calcium chloride (CaCl₂) and calcium fluoride (CaF₂) additives, and the influence of temperature on the metallization degree, iron recovery, phase transformation, and microstructure of the dried calcine. The raw materials employed in this study included red mud, coal, calcium chloride, and calcium fluoride, which were mixed homogeneously and pelletized into dimensions of 10-15 mm in diameter. The reduction roasting was conducted in a muffle furnace at temperatures ranging from 1050°C to 1250°C for a duration of 60 minutes. Subsequently, a magnetic separation process was implemented on the dried calcine to separate the iron metals from gangue minerals. The results demonstrate that the addition of CaF₂ exhibits superior effects compared to CaCl₂. Specifically, the addition of CaCl₂ yielded lower degrees of metallization and iron recovery than those achieved with CaF₂. Furthermore, higher reduction temperatures are necessary for samples with CaCl₂ to attain elevated metallization degree and iron recovery. Optimal conditions were identified with the addition of 8% CaF₂ and 1 stoichiometric reductant, subjected to a reduction roasting temperature of 1250°C for 60 minutes, resulting in a metallization degree of 93.5%, an iron recovery of 98%, and an iron concentrate with an Fe content of 83.642%. date: 2024-03-06 type: Thesis type: NonPeerReviewed format: text language: id identifier: https://eprints.untirta.ac.id/47363/14/Tiara%20Nur%20Salsabila_3334200086_Fulltext.pdf format: text language: id identifier: https://eprints.untirta.ac.id/47363/13/Tiara%20Nur%20Salsabila_3334200086_01.pdf format: text language: id identifier: https://eprints.untirta.ac.id/47363/1/Tiara%20Nur%20Salsabila_3334200086_02.pdf format: text language: id identifier: https://eprints.untirta.ac.id/47363/2/Tiara%20Nur%20Salsabila_3334200086_03.pdf format: text language: id identifier: https://eprints.untirta.ac.id/47363/3/Tiara%20Nur%20Salsabila_3334200086_04.pdf format: text language: id identifier: https://eprints.untirta.ac.id/47363/4/Tiara%20Nur%20Salsabila_3334200086_05.pdf format: text language: id identifier: https://eprints.untirta.ac.id/47363/6/Tiara%20Nur%20Salsabila_3334200086_Ref.pdf format: text language: id identifier: https://eprints.untirta.ac.id/47363/5/Tiara%20Nur%20Salsabila_3334200086_Lamp.pdf identifier: NUR SALSABILA, TIARA (2024) EKSTRAKSI LOGAM BESI DARI RED MUD MENGGUNAKAN METODE REDUCTION ROASTING-MAGNETIC SEPARATION DENGAN PENAMBAHAN KALSIUM KLORIDA DAN KALSIUM FLUORIDA.
