This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were 12 students out of 30 students of class X B MAN 1 Kota Cilegon with high, medium and low mathematical understanding abilities. The data collection technique in this study used test and interview instruments. The data analysis technique used according to Miles and Huberman The data validity technique used is technical triangulation, namely comparing the results of the mathematical understanding test with interviews. The results of the study showed that there were 7 students (27%) who were included in the category of students with high mathematical understanding abilities; 12 students (46%) are included in the category of students with moderate mathematical understanding abilities, and 7 students (27%) are included in the category of students with low mathematical understanding abilities. Students with high mathematical understanding abilities have good understanding and are able to fulfill all layers of understanding according to Pirie Kieren's theory, namely primitive knowing, image making, image having, property noticing, formalising, observing, structuring, and inventising. Students with high mathematical understanding abilities experience two forms of folding back, namely working on deeper layers and collecting deeper layers because they want to check their answers until they produce the right answer. Students with moderate mathematical understanding abilities have quite good understanding and are able to fulfill seven layers of understanding according to Pirie Kieren's theory, namely primitive knowing, image making, image having, property noticing, formalising, and observing. and structuring. Students with moderate mathematical comprehension skills experience two forms of folding back, namely working on deeper layers and collecting deeper layers because they want to check their answers until they produce the right answer. Students with low mathematical comprehension skills have poor understanding and only fulfill one to three layers of understanding according to Pirie Kieren's theory, namely primitive knowing, image making, and image having.
