The research method used in this research is quasi experiment and nonequivalent control group design. There are two classes in this study, namely the experimental class and the control class. The population and sample in the experimental class consisted of 16 students who were given treatment by applying problem-based learning and the control class consisted of 16 students who applied direct learning in math learning activities on fraction material. Data collection used in the study using observation sheets, pretest and posttest. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistical analysis, inferential statistical analysis and qualitative descriptive analysis. The result of the research is the ability to solve story problems on fraction material with the application of problem-based learning is better than direct learning.
