Women have often been depicted as objects bound by certain stereotypes, such as symbols of weakness and dependence, reflected in both characterizations and plotlines. A study of Indonesian films, especially those focusing on women and Minangkabau culture, reveals how cultural values and social norms influence the representation of women in film. For example, in films such as Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck and Liam dan Laila, Minangkabau women are portrayed as figures bound by customary rules, where failure to adhere to these norms leads to conflict. These stereotypes, although still present in Indonesian films, are gradually shifting with the emergence of feminist themes that depict women as strong, independent figures advocating for gender equality. This reflects a societal shift toward understanding the equal role and rights of women alongside men. Therefore, film serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for conveying cultural messages and education that can shape public perceptions of women, both in traditional and modern contexts.
