The research aims to identify the politeness strategies commonly employed by the lecturer and students during classroom interactions and to explore the factors influencing their use. Adopting a qualitative descriptive method, the study utilizes observations and interviews for data collection. The participants consist of a lecturer and 42 first-semester students from the English Education program at Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Data were analyzed using Leech’s (2007) and Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theories. The findings reveal that the most frequently utilized strategies were obligation of S to O, opinion-reticence, and approbation. These results highlight the lecturer’s predominant use of politeness strategies to encourage active student participation in the classroom.
