Civil engineering (General) description: Asphalt is a binder in flexible pavements that is sensitive to temperature changes. One way to reduce this sensitivity is to modify asphalt using waste plastic polymers. This research aims to prove the use of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastic waste can improve the quality of asphalt and utilize plastic waste that is difficult to decompose. Plastic asphalt is expected to have resistance to temperature changes and deformation compared to 60/70 penetration asphalt. The study showed that the use of 2%, 4%, 6% LDPE plastic waste increased the viscosity and softening point values, but decreased the penetration and specific gravity values of asphalt. The sensitivity of asphalt decreased and the penetration index increased so that the asphalt was less sensitive to temperature changes. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) results show that LDPE asphalt has an increase in certain chemical compositions that affect the response to temperature changes. However, the absorption pattern of certain wave numbers between 60/70 penetration asphalt and LDPE asphalt showed moderate absorption for C-H stretching in alkanes and C-H bending in alkane methyl groups with different transmittance values. This indicates that the asphalt is stiffer and prone to cracking when loaded beyond its capacity, but it can still be used in the long term on pavements with extreme temperatures because of its reduced temperature sensitivity.
