description: The objectives of this research are: (1) To describe the background of the emergence of the southern region of Tangerang Regency as a new autonomous region, (2) To analyse the process of regional expansion of South Tangerang City (2000-2008). The research method used is the historical research method which consists of heuristics which can be interpreted as an action that includes searching for sources, collecting data, or obtaining material or historical evidence, criticism is an effort to obtain authenticity and credibility of sources, criticism is divided into two, namely external/internal criticism, interpretation is an activity of interpreting historical data, which forms subjectivity and allows historians to explain hidden meanings and intentions, and historiography is the final stage of a historical research which is the process of compiling the results of writing that has been researched. The theory in this research uses the theory of regional expansion, the theory of decentralisation and regional autonomy, and the theory of cities. These theories are used to analyse the process of regional expansion, especially the southern region that became South Tangerang City in 2000-2008. The results of this study show that the background of the expansion process came from the community's unrest over the rapid growth-driven process in the South, which gave rise to the need for better governance, especially related to infrastructure and public services that were perceived to be less effective and efficient. This research highlights the role of the local community in fighting to separate the region with the existence of community organisations such as the Committee for the Establishment of Cipasera City Autonomous Region (KPPDO-KC), Bakor Cipasera, Formats, and the Ciputat Communication Forum (FKMC) the dynamics during the process of expanding the South Tangerang City area until the results desired by the community are contained in the regulations of law no 51 of 2008, and in the results of this study slightly discuss the dynamics of the vacancy of leaders after the formation of this new autonomous city.
