The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving a population of 90 students across three classes. Through purposive sampling, 60 students were selected from two distinct classes, with XI Science 1 as the experimental class and XI Science 2 as the control class. Data collection was conducted using pre-tests and post-tests in essay format. The analysis of pre-test and post-test results revealed that the mean score of the experimental class utilizing ChatGPT was higher than the control class, which did not employ ChatGPT. The independent t-test yielded a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, indicating a result less than 0.05, thereby leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Additionally, the effect size test showed 1.18, which means that, based on Cohen's interpretation, the category was “high effect.” It means that ChatGPT was effective on students’ writing skills at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Puloampel in high effect, especially in the explanation text material.
