One important mathematical proficiency to develop is problem-solving ability, which also depends on another mathematical proficiency, namely conceptual understanding ability. However, the reality is that the conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities of students in Indonesia are still low. The low ability is related to how students manage and process the information they receive when studying the material, considering cognitive load. Learning while considering cognitive load is believed to enhance students' conceptual understanding and mathematical problem-solving abilities. This research was conducted at State Junior High School 20 in Kota Serang during the academic year 2023/2024. The research aims to determine whether students' conceptual understanding and mathematical problem-solving abilities with learning that considers cognitive load are better than students with conventional learning, both in terms of initial abilities and not, and to further understand students' mathematical skills based on their initial mathematical abilities. The method used in this research is mixed methods with a sequential explanatory design. The research instruments consist of initial ability tests, conceptual understanding tests, and problem-solving ability tests, as test instruments, and questionnaires, interviews, and documentation as non-test instruments.
