Abstract

In construction, the characteristic of beam required are strength, stiffness and its weight. Those three variables had effect to mechanical behavior each other. In special case, a construction required light weight and high in strength and stiffness. Since 1987, cellular beam had been produced. This beam structure has different shape and dimension of cell. This profile has advantages, such as lightweight, ability to support the loading and easy to install the other part in this construction. This paper presents to discuss the effect of dimension of cell toward the performance of beam, such as stress, strain and deflection of beam. The beam used in this research is aluminum Al 6061 with the different circle of cell. The weight of cell is constant. Diameter of cell is 20, 26, 30 and 36 mm, respectively. The pitch of cell had been adjusted to cell diameter. To investigate the strength of beam carried out the experiment and FEM. The result of this experiment shows that the diameter of cell has effect to the strength and stiffness of beam. The tensile stress of beam is 42,6 MPa,43,5 MPa, 30,2 MPa and 28,2 MPa, respectively. Whereas the deflection of beam is 0,515 mm ,0,518 mm, 0,518 mm and 0,57 mm, respectively. The cell diameter of 30 mm is the potential choice for construction because of its strength and deflection.
