Abstract
ABSTRACT The Joker film, apart from being a film that talks about one of the anti-hero characters, is also categorized as a psychological film. The storyline in the film is full of psychological issues, one of which is mental health and mental illness. The Joker film became controversial because after watching the film the audience was affected by the psychological aspect. This film went viral in cyberspace and the issue of mental illness became a topic of discussion in academic studies in the field of communication science. Seeing these events, through this article the author wants to describe the audience's acceptance of the mental issue of Illness contained in the Joker film. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The researcher uses reception analysis theory and research methods. The result of this research is the attitude and position of the audience in accepting the issue of mental illness is divided into dominant and negotiated hegemony. The classification of these two groups is influenced by experience, insight, proximity, and the relevance of the audience concerned with the plot, characters, and other components in the film.
