Abstract

Instrumen wawancara diadaptasi angket The Mathematics Attitudes and Perceptions Survey (The MAPS).

Additional Information: This research was background by junior high school students who had the perception of mathematical subjects was a frightening and difficult to comprehend spectre. To get information about students ' perception in depth and breadth, the researcher conducted the research by using a qualitative approach. This research involves the students of SMPN 13 Tangerang City, with 28 students as the subject. An interview instrument adapted from the question in The Mathematics Attitudes and Perceptions Survey (The MAPS) poll. The validity of data was done by triangulating the source and triangulation methods. Data analysis used a fixed comparison method. The results of the study are: Characteristics of the conceptual perception type have the following traits: 1) Students understand well that studying mathematics is useful in daily life, 2) students are interested in learning math subjects, 3) students have dilligently properties and not easily discouraged from working on difficult problems, 4) Students are pleased to successfully solve difficult questions and consider that understanding the formula is useful to understand the concept of mathematics, and 5) students know well the importance of understanding the concept of Math. The characteristics of the procedural perception type have the following traits: 1) Students argue that everyone can be good at mathematics, 2) students have a routine math learning time and know the efficient time to learn math, 3) Students feel happy when they successful working on difficult questions and consider that understanding the formula is useful only to work on the questions, 4) Students choose to understand the ways how to solve and the formulas instead of having to memorize them. Characteristics of this type of practical perception have the following traits: 1) Students only understand that learning mathematics is useful in the trading process, 2) Students are not diligent when solving the difficult questions, 3) Students feel the understanding is better than Others if they succeed in solving the difficult questions and students assess that the importance of understanding how to solve is useful in the exams and also in daily life, 4) students do not understand the mathematical concepts or formulas well and students choose to memorize the answers of a settlement, and 5) students only learn mathematics when there is a task or a test.
