Abstract

This study investigated conjunction errors in essays of fourth-semester students of English Education Department of University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. It was aimed to know the types of errors on the use of conjunction, the types of conjunction errors occurred most frequently, and the causes of errors. This study employed qualitative approach with content analysis method. In this study, the instruments used were students‟ essays and interview. Therefore, the analysis of this study embraced two phases, textual analysis and interpretive interview. The finding showed that there were 100 sentences errors found in student essays with 64 of misuse, 13 of omission, 12 of redundant repetition, and 11 of unnecessary addition. Moreover, extending conjunction (61%) was the predominant of conjunction features used inappropriately, followed by enhancing (38%), and elaborating (1%). In this case, the causes of the students committed errors in their writing resulted from mother tongue interference and overgeneralization. Meanwhile, context of learning was not defined. Therefore, the students and teacher should be more aware of the errors in writing, especially the conjunction features, to avoid errors in future writing.
