Abstract
This study aims to analyze the paradox of social capital in the electoral viability of Aam Amarullah as a legislative incumbent who failed to retain his seat in the 2024 General Election, despite possessing strong social networks and serving two consecutive terms. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method and is analyzed through Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, which conceptualizes politics as an arena (field) of struggle among various forms of capital. The social capital owned by Aam Amarullah, in the form of relational networks with the community and local actors, was unable to be effectively converted into political capital due to an imbalance with the more dominant economic capital of competing candidates within the electoral arena. Furthermore, the symbolic capital derived from his image as a figure close to the community was insufficient to maintain a dominant position when the structure of the local political arena shifted toward more pragmatic and transactional competition. The findings indicate that social capital cannot function independently as a determinant of electoral success but is highly dependent on the relationships and conversion capacity among different forms of capital. Thus, Aam Amarullah’s electoral failure reflects the paradox of social capital within a competitive local political context.

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis paradoks modal sosial dalam elektabilitas Aam Amarullah sebagai petahana legislatif yang gagal mempertahankan kursinya pada Pemilu Tahun 2024, meskipun memiliki jaringan sosial yang kuat dan pengalaman menjabat selama dua periode. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus, serta dianalisis menggunakan teori Pierre Bourdieu yang memandang politik sebagai arena (field) pertarungan berbagai bentuk modal. Modal sosial yang dimiliki Aam Amarullah berupa jaringan relasi dengan masyarakat dan aktor lokal tidak berhasil dikonversi menjadi modal politik yang efektif karena ketidakseimbangan dengan modal ekonomi pesaing yang lebih dominan dalam arena elektoral. Selain itu, modal simbolik yang terbentuk dari citra sebagai figur dekat dengan masyarakat tidak cukup kuat untuk mempertahankan posisi dominan ketika struktur arena politik lokal mengalami pergeseran ke arah kompetisi yang lebih pragmatis dan transaksional. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa modal sosial tidak dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai penentu elektabilitas, melainkan dipengaruhi pada relasi dan kemampuan konversi antar-modal. Dengan demikian, kegagalan elektoral Aam Amarullah mencerminkan paradoks modal sosial dalam konteks politik lokal yang kompetitif. | ||||||
