Abstract

Air pollution caused by diesel engine exhaust emissions such as CO, NOx, HC, PM 2.5, and SO2 can have harmful effects on both health and the environment. To reduce this pollution, efforts are being made by developing filter media made from natural and environmentally friendly materials, specifically filters made from cellulose acetate filaments. The main goal of this research is to analyze the characteristics of exhaust gas flow using a cellulose-based air filter and to measure the mass change of the filter in a sign of the effectiveness of the filter in a Yanmar L 40 AE-STM diesel engine. The testing method was carried out by operating the Yanmar L 40 AE-STM diesel engine, which was equipped with a cellulose air filter, on the exhaust passage. The test was conducted for durations of 5, 10, and 15 minutes, with the engine running at RPMs of approximately 1500, 2000, and 2500. This study's results show that the exhaust gas flow passing through the cellulose based air filter is in the laminar flow regime, with Reynolds numbers ranging from 385 to 639 across all test duration variations. The longer the test duration, the higher the actual flow rate, pressure drop, and pressure loss coefficient. There is also an increase in the mass difference of the cellulose filter for all test durations with RPM around 1500, 2000, and 2500 a successful outcome for all variations of test time with RPM settings around 1500, 2000, and 2500.

Upaya mengurang polusi tersebut dilakukan dengan mengembangkan media filter yang terbuat dari bahan alami dan ramah lingkungan yaitu filter dengan berbahan filamen selulosa asetat. Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah menganalisis karakteristik aliran gas buang menggunakan filter udara berbahan selulosa dan mengukur perubahan massa filter pada mesin diesel Yanmar L 40 AE-STM. Metode pengujian dilakukan dengan mengoperasikan mesin diesel Yanmar L 40 AE-STM yang sudah terpasang filter udara berbahan selulosa pada saluran gas buang dengan pengujian selama 5 menit, 10 menit dan 15 menit dengan RPM sekitar 1500, 2000, dan 2500. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa aliran gas buang yang melewati filter udara berbahan selulosa berada dalam jenis aliran laminar dengan bilangan Reynolds berkisar di antara 385 hingga 639 untuk semua variasi waktu pengujian. Peningkatan durasi pengujian berbanding lurus dengan peningkatan debit aktual, pressure drop dan pressure loss coefficient. Peningkatan juga berlaku pada selisih massa filter selulosa untuk semua variasi waktu pengujian dengan RPM sekitar 1500, 2000, dan 2500.
