Abstract

This study explores the role of the Falou application in improving students’ speaking skills at SMAN 3 Serang. Using a qualitative approach with observation, interviews, and questionnaires as instruments, the research aimed to answer three main problems: how Falou supports students in speaking, what challenges they encounter, and how the app compares with classroom practice. The findings indicate that Falou successfully enhanced students’ confidence, improved their pronunciation through instant feedback, and increased their participation in class activities. Students reported feeling less anxious when practicing privately with the app, which encouraged them to speak more freely. Despite these benefits, challenges such as unstable internet connections, limited vocabulary, and over-reliance on the app were identified as obstacles.Furthermore, while Falou was more effective in providing repeated practice and corrective feedback, traditional classroom learning remained essential for authentic interaction and fluency. Thus, Falou should not replace but rather complement classroom practice as part of a blended learning approach.

Additional Information: Studi ini mengeksplorasi peran aplikasi Falou dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa di SMAN 3 Serang. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan observasi, wawancara, dan kuesioner sebagai instrumen, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjawab tiga masalah utama: bagaimana Falou mendukung siswa dalam berbicara, tantangan apa yang mereka hadapi, dan bagaimana aplikasi tersebut dibandingkan dengan praktik di kelas. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa Falou berhasil meningkatkan kepercayaan diri siswa, meningkatkan pengucapan mereka melalui umpan balik instan, dan meningkatkan partisipasi mereka dalam kegiatan kelas. Siswa melaporkan merasa kurang cemas ketika berlatih secara pribadi dengan aplikasi tersebut, yang mendorong mereka untuk berbicara lebih bebas. Terlepas dari manfaat tersebut, tantangan seperti koneksi internet yang tidak stabil, kosakata yang terbatas, dan ketergantungan yang berlebihan pada aplikasi diidentifikasi sebagai hambatan. Lebih lanjut, meskipun Falou lebih efektif dalam memberikan latihan berulang dan umpan balik korektif, pembelajaran di kelas tradisional tetap penting untuk interaksi dan kefasihan yang autentik. Dengan demikian, Falou seharusnya tidak menggantikan tetapi lebih melengkapi praktik di kelas sebagai bagian dari pendekatan pembelajaran campuran.
