Abstract

Gastropods are a phylum of Mollusca that are capable of adapting to mangrove ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the diversity of gastropods in the mangrove area of the Ujung Kulon Peninsula, Banten, and to explore its potential use as recommended instructional content for ecosystem-related learning materials. The study was conducted in June 2025 using a purposive sampling method at five stations: Station I (Cilintang), Station II (Laban), Station III (Handeleum), Station IV (Cigenter), and Station V (Cidaon), each characterized by different environmental conditions and substrate types. Sampling was carried out using the line transect method, accompanied by measurements of environmental parameters including air temperature, light intensity, humidity, and soil pH. Species identification was conducted at the Biology Education Laboratory of Untirta. The results revealed the presence of 18 gastropod species belonging to 12 families, with a total of 828 individuals recorded. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’) ranged from 1.560 to 2.513, with the highest value observed at Station III (Handeleum) and the lowest at Station IV (Cigenter). Variations in gastropod diversity were influenced by differences in environmental conditions such as substrate type, pH, and humidity among stations. This finding has the potential to be utilized as contextual instructional material in ecosystem topics, as it provides a concrete illustration of the relationships between biotic and abiotic components and supports the implementation of research-based learning. Through the integration of research findings into teaching materials, students are expected to gain a deeper and more applicable understanding of ecosystem concepts.
