Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of the BBC 6 Minute English podcast on students’ listening comprehension at SMAN 1 Cikande. This research aimed to find out whether students taught through podcast-based instruction achieved higher listening comprehension scores than those taught using monologue-based audio. The research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design consisting of an experimental class and a control class. The total population was 527 eleventh-grade students, and 76 students were selected as the sample through cluster random sampling. The instrument used was a listening comprehension test administered as a pre-test and a post-test. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 26, including tests of validity, reliability, normality, homogeneity, and an independent samples t-test. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental class increased from 66.34 to 84.11, while the control class increased from 69.95 to 73.50. The significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between both groups. The effect size (Cohen’s d) was 1.03, categorized as a large effect. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of the BBC 6 Minute English podcast has a significant and positive effect on students’ listening comprehension.

Additional Information: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh podcast BBC 6 Minute English terhadap pemahaman mendengarkan siswa di SMAN 1 Cikande. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan apakah siswa yang diajar melalui pembelajaran berbasis podcast memperoleh skor pemahaman mendengarkan yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan siswa yang diajar menggunakan audio berbasis monolog. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain kuasi-eksperimen yang terdiri dari kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Populasi total berjumlah 527 siswa kelas XI, dan 76 siswa dipilih sebagai sampel melalui teknik cluster random sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes pemahaman mendengarkan yang diberikan sebagai pre-test dan post-test. Data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS versi 26, termasuk uji validitas, reliabilitas, normalitas, homogenitas, serta uji t sampel independen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata kelas eksperimen meningkat dari 66,34 menjadi 84,11, sedangkan kelas kontrol meningkat dari 69,95 menjadi 73,50. Nilai signifikansi (Sig. 2-tailed) sebesar 0,000 < 0,05 menunjukkan adanya perbedaan signifikan antara kedua kelompok. Ukuran efek (Cohen’s d) sebesar 1,03 dikategorikan sebagai efek besar. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan podcast BBC 6 Minute English memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan dan positif terhadap pemahaman mendengarkan siswa.
