Abstract

In a complex work environment, adaptability is key to professional success. Internship programs help develop this ability through hands-on experience in a real-world work environment. However, differences in culture, norms, and communication in a new environment often pose adaptation challenges that can trigger culture shock, which is confusion or discomfort caused by cultural differences. Therefore, this study aims to determine the forms of culture shock experienced by interns and to determine the work environment that influences the emergence of culture shock in interns. This study uses a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm. The methods and theories used in this study are Alfred Schutz's Phenomenology communication and Edmund Husserl's Phenomenological Approach Theory. The results of this study indicate that the internship experience at the Banten Regional Police was quite a challenging adaptation process for the informants, as they had to enter a work environment very different from their daily lives on campus. Their lack of experience led them to experience culture shock, particularly related to the formal communication style, strict hierarchy, and fast- paced, high-priority work pace. Although initially feeling awkward, stressed, and worried about making mistakes, support from their supervisors and the Banten Regional Police staff helped them through the adjustment process. Ultimately, the informants successfully adapted, understood the values of professionalism and discipline, and developed more mature and responsible work character.

Additional Information: Di tengah dunia kerja yang kompleks, kemampuan beradaptasi menjadi kunci keberhasilan profesional. Program magang membantu mengembangkan kemampuan ini melalui pengalaman langsung di lingkungan kerja nyata. Namun, perbedaan budaya, norma, dan komunikasi di tempat baru sering menimbulkan tantangan adaptasi yang dapat memicu culture shock, yaitu kondisi kebingungan atau ketidaknyamanan akibat perbedaan budaya. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bentuk pengalaman culture shock yang di alami mahasiswa magang dan mengetahui suasana kerja yang mempengaruhi munculnya culture shock pada mahasiswa magang. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktivisme. Metode dan Teori yang digunakan adalah Fenomenologi Komunikasi oleh Alfred Schutz dan Teori Pendekatan Fenomenologi Edmund Husserl dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian ini Pengalaman magang di Polda Banten menjadi proses adaptasi yang cukup menantang bagi para informan karena harus memasuki lingkungan kerja yang sangat berbeda dari keseharian mereka di kampus. Minimnya pengalaman membuat mereka mengalami culture shock, terutama terkait gaya komunikasi formal, hierarki yang ketat, serta ritme kerja yang cepat dan penuh prioritas. Meskipun awalnya merasa canggung, tertekan, dan khawatir melakukan kesalahan, dukungan dari pembimbing serta staf Polda Banten membantu mereka melalui proses penyesuaian. Pada akhirnya, para informan berhasil beradaptasi, memahami nilai profesionalitas dan kedisiplinan, serta mengembangkan karakter kerja yang lebih matang dan bertanggung jawab.
