Abstract
Indonesia, as a multicultural country, has various traditional rituals that contain distinctive communication practices, one of which is the Mapag Panganten tradition in Serang City. In this procession, the Ambu dancer stands out as a symbolic “elder” figure who is both wise and humorous, often serving as a bridge between sacred elements and entertainment. This study aims to examine the speech situation, speech event, and speech acts of the Ambu dancer in Mapag Panganten based on Dell Hymes’ Ethnography of Communication. This research employs a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach and the ethnography of communication method. Data were collected through interviews informant, observation and documentation. The findings show a shift in the speech situation from a predominantly sacred customary procession toward a more flexible performance with entertainment value. The speech event demonstrates a clear communicative structure through the SPEAKING components, with the genre combining ritual and entertainment. The Ambu dancer’s speech acts include greetings, humor, directions, and prayers (verbal), as well as gestures, facial expressions, costume, and dance movements (nonverbal), all regulated by norms of politeness and propriety. In conclusion, the Ambu dancer’s communication reflects a process of cultural adaptation in which the Mapag Panganten tradition is maintained while being reinterpreted to remain relevant to contemporary sociocultural needs

| Additional Information: | Indonesia sebagai negara multikultural memiliki beragam ritual adat yang memuat praktik komunikasi khas, salah satunya Tradisi Mapag Panganten di Kota Serang. Dalam prosesi ini, tokoh Penari Ambu tampil menonjol sebagai figur “orang tua” yang bijak sekaligus jenaka dan kerap berfungsi sebagai penghubung antara unsur sakral dan hiburan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui situasi komunikatif, peristiwa komunikatif, dan tindak komunikatif Penari Ambu dalam Mapag Panganten berdasarkan kajian Etnografi Komunikasi Dell Hymes. Penelitian menggunakan paradigma konstruktivis dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan metode etnografi komunikasi. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara informan, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya pergeseran situasi komunikatif dari prosesi adat yang dominan sakral menjadi pertunjukan yang lebih fleksibel dan bernilai hiburan. Peristiwa komunikatif memiliki struktur komunikasi yang jelas melalui komponen SPEAKING, dengan genre prosesi berupa perpaduan ritual dan hiburan. Tindak komunikatif Ambu mencakup sapaan, humor, arahan, dan doa secara verbal serta gestur, mimik, kostum, dan gerak tari secara nonverbal, dengan batasan norma kesopanan. Kesimpulannya, komunikasi Penari Ambu mencerminkan proses adaptasi budaya, di mana tradisi Mapag Panganten tetap dipertahankan namun ditafsirkan ulang agar relevan dengan kebutuhan sosialbudaya masyarakat masa kini. | ||||||||||||
