Abstract

Faira Ajeng Rumdhani. 2025. 2289210016. A Semiotic Analysis of Ferdinand de Saussure in the Movements of the Walijamaliha Dance: Undergraduate Thesis. Department of Performing Arts Education. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. This study aims to analyze the signs and meanings contained in the movements of the Walijamaliha Dance using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic approach. The focus of the research is directed toward the relationship between the signifier and the signified in each sequence of movements, and how this relationship reflects the spiritual and cultural values of the Banten community. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with observation, interview, and documentation techniques involving instructors, dancers, and cultural figures at the Raksa Budaya Studio in Serang City. The results show that each movement in the Walijamaliha Dance embodies a layered system of signs, encompassing the symbolism of Islamic teachings, reverence for ancestors, and the affirmation of women’s identity within the local Banten context. These findings affirm that the Walijamaliha Dance functions not only as an aesthetic performance but also as a cultural text that conveys the moral and spiritual narratives of its community. Thus, Saussure’s semiotic approach helps reveal that dance movements are a form of language expressing complex social and religious messages. Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tanda dan makna yang terkandung dalam gerak Tari Walijamaliha dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Ferdinand de Saussure. Fokus kajian diarahkan pada relasi antara penanda (signifier) dan petanda (signified) dalam setiap rangkaian gerak, serta bagaimana hubungan tersebut mencerminkan nilai-nilai spiritual dan budaya masyarakat Banten. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi terhadap pelatih, penari, serta tokoh budaya di Sanggar Raksa Budaya Kota Serang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa setiap gerak dalam Tari Walijamaliha mengandung sistem tanda yang berlapis, mencakup simbolisasi ajaran Islam, penghormatan terhadap leluhur, serta penegasan identitas perempuan dalam konteks lokal Banten. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa Tari Walijamaliha tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai pertunjukan estetis, melainkan juga sebagai teks budaya yang menuturkan narasi moral dan spiritual masyarakatnya. Dengan demikian, pendekatan semiotika Saussure membantu membuka pemahaman bahwa gerak tari adalah bahasa yang menyampaikan pesan sosial dan religius yang kompleks.
