Abstract
This study aims to analyze the representation of feminism in the character of Mia Thermopolis in the film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement using the semiotic approach of Roland Barthes. The film portrays Mia’s journey as a young female heir who must confront a monarchical system that restricts women’s rights, particularly in leadership and marriage. This research employs a qualitative method by examining twelve selected units of analysis derived from key scenes in the film. The analysis is conducted through three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth, in order to reveal symbolic meanings and underlying ideological messages related to gender representation. The findings indicate that the film represents feminism through Mia’s courage to question unjust royal laws, assert her autonomy, and demand equal rights within a patriarchal monarchical structure. At the mythological level, the film reflects a critique of traditional patriarchal values embedded in systems of power. | Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi feminisme pada tokoh Mia Thermopolis dalam film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes. Film ini menggambarkan perjalanan Mia sebagai calon pemimpin perempuan yang dihadapkan pada sistem monarki dengan aturan yang membatasi hak perempuan, khususnya dalam konteks kepemimpinan dan pernikahan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan menganalisis dua belas unit analisis yang dipilih dari adegan-adegan penting dalam film. Analisis dilakukan melalui tiga tingkat pemaknaan, yaitu denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos, untuk mengungkap makna simbolik serta ideologi yang terkandung dalam representasi tokoh utama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film ini merepresentasikan feminisme melalui sikap dan keputusan Mia yang berani mempertanyakan hukum kerajaan yang tidak adil, menegaskan otonomi dirinya sebagai perempuan, serta memperjuangkan hak yang setara dengan laki-laki dalam sistem monarki. Pada tingkat mitos, film ini merefleksikan kritik terhadap budaya patriarki yang masih melekat dalam struktur kekuasaan tradisional.
