Abstract

One of the many important language skills in learning Indonesian is writing, which requires logical thinking, accuracy, and good mastery of written language. One of the many writing skills that junior high school students must master is writing descriptive texts. However, the results of researchers' observations indicate that students have low descriptive text writing skills. One of the causes is the learning method that does not involve students actively, creatively, and meaningfully. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method on the writing skills of seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Kota Serang. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method. The research design used was a nonequivalent control group design. The research sample was determined using a purposive sampling technique with class VII A as the experimental class applying the CIRC method and class VII B as the control class applying conventional learning methods. Data collection techniques were carried out through descriptive text writing tests in the form of pretests and posttests which were analyzed using statistical tests. The results showed that the posttest results of the experimental class had an average score of 84.93 while the posttest results of the control class had an average score of 78.9. The posttest results of the experimental class were better than the control class. The results of the N-Gain test in the experimental class showed that the average value was 64.69, based on the N-Gain value category, it showed that the average N-Gain value of the experimental class was in the quite effective category. While in the control class, the average value was 50.69, based on the average N-Gain value, the control class was in the less effective category, and tended to be lower than the experimental class. This proves that the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition learning method is an effective learning method used to improve students' writing skills. Hypothesis testing shows that is rejected and is accepted because the results of the hypothesis test using the t-test show that the Sig. (2-Tailed) value is 0.000. The significance value is smaller than the significance level of 0.05 (0.000 <0.05). Based on these results, it can be concluded that the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method has a significant influence and is more effective than conventional learning methods in improving the descriptive text writing skills of class VII students of SMP Negeri 6 Kota Serang. Additional Information: Satu dari banyaknya keterampilan berbahasa yang penting dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia adalah kemampuan menulis, yang menuntut pemikiran logis, ketelitian, dan penguasaan bahasa tulis yang baik. Satu dari banyaknya keterampilan menulis yang harus dikuasai siswa SMP adalah menulis teks deskripsi. Namun, hasil amatan peneliti menunjukkan bahwa siswa memiliki keterampilan menulis teks deskripsi yang rendah. Salah satu penyebabnya adalah metode pembelajaran yang tidak melibatkan siswa secara aktif, kreatif, dan bermakna. Tujuan dari penelitian ini ialah untuk mengetahui pengaruh metode Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) terhadap keterampilan menulis siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 6 Kota Serang. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen semu (quasi experimental). Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah nonequivalent control group design. Sampel penelitian ditentukan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling dengan kelas VII A sebagai kelas eksperimen yang menerapkan metode CIRC dan kelas VII B sebagai kelas kontrol yang menerapkan metode pembelajaran konvensional. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui tes menulis teks deskripsi dalam bentuk pretest dan posttest yang dianalisis menggunakan uji statistik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil posttest kelas eksperimen memiliki nilai rata-rata sebesar 84,93 sedangkan posttest kelas kontrol memiliki nilai rata-rata sebesar 78,9. Hasil posttest kelas eksperimen lebih baik dibandingkan kelas kontrol. Hasil uji N-Gain pada kelas eksperimen menunjukan bahwa nilai rata-rata sebesar 64,69, berdasarkan kategori nilai N-Gain menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata N-Gain kelas eksperimen masuk kedalam kategori cukup efektif. Sedangkan pada kelas kontrol menunjukan nilai rata-rata sebesar 50,69, berdasarkan nilai rata-rata N-Gain kelas kontrol masuk kedalam kategori kurang efektif, dan cenderung lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan kelas eksperimen. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa metode pembelajaran Cooperatif Integrated Reading and Composition merupakan metode pembelajaran yang efektif digunakan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa. Pengujian hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa ditolak dan diterima karena hasil uji hipotesis menggunakan uji-T menunjukkan bahwa nilai Sig. (2–Tailed) sebesar 0,000. Nilai signifikansi tersebut lebih kecil dari taraf signifikansi 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05). Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa metode Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) berpengaruh secara signifikan dan lebih efektif dibandingkan metode pembelajaran konvensional dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks deskripsi siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 6 Kota Serang.
