Abstract

Domestic wastewater generated by activities at the Faculty of Engineering, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University has the potential to pollute the environment if not properly managed. An electrochemical method based on electrolysis is an effective and environmentally friendly solution, offering advantages such as a simple process and minimal chemical usage. The purpose of this research is to identify the phenomena that occur during the electrolysis process and to evaluate the effects of variations in electrolysis voltage, electrolysis time, and electrode distance on the reduction of pH, TDS, COD, BOD levels, as well as on the reduction in the weight of the electrodes used in the treatment of domestic wastewater from toilets and the cafeteria at the Faculty of Engineering, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. The method used in this study involved varying the electrolysis time for 4, 5, and 6 hours; voltage variations of 12, 14, and 16 volts; and electrode distance variations of 4 cm and 8 cm. Data were then collected and the COD, BOD, TDS, and pH contents in wastewater samples were compared before and after the electrolysis process. The electrolysis process in liquid waste treatment produces various significant electrochemical reactions. At the cathode, hydrogen gas is formed, helping to lift suspended flocs, while at the anode, oxidation of the aluminum electrode produces Al³⁺ ions. The reduction in aluminum electrode weight increases with higher voltage, longer processing time, and shorter electrode distance. An increase in pH occurs with increasing voltage and processing time, although an electrode distance that is too close can hinder ion diffusion. High voltage generates gas that helps reduce TDS through flotation of dissolved particles. Electrolysis improves treatment efficiency by reducing COD and increasing methane production, while optimal conditions for BOD reduction are achieved at 16 volts, 6 hours, and a 4 cm electrode distance, resulting in a BOD reduction of up to 72.73%.

Additional Information: Air limbah domestik yang dihasilkan oleh aktivitas di Fakultas Teknik Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa berpotensi mencemari lingkungan jika tidak dikelola dengan baik. Metode elektrokimia berbasis elektrolisis menjadi solusi efektif dan ramah lingkungan dengan keunggulan proses yang mudah dan minim bahan kimia. Tujuan dilakukannya penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui fenomena yang terjadi saat proses elektrolisis dan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh variasi tegangan elektrolisis, waktu elektrolisis, serta jarak elektroda terhadap penurunan kadar pH, TDS, COD, BOD, dan penurunan berat elektroda yang digunakan dalam pengolahan air limbah domestik toilet dan kantin di Fakultas Teknik Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu dengan memvariasikan waktu elektrolisis selama 4; 5; 6 jam serta variasi tegangan 12; 14; 16 volt, dan variasi jarak elektroda 4 cm dan 8 cm. Selanjutnya dilakukan pengumpulan data-data penelitian serta membandingkan kandungan COD; BOD; TDS; dan pH pada sampel air limbah sebelum dan setelah dilakukan proses elektrolisis. Proses elektrolisis dalam pengolahan limbah cair menghasilkan berbagai reaksi elektrokimia yang signifikan. Pada katoda, gas hidrogen terbentuk membantu mengangkat flok tersuspensi, sementara di anoda terjadi oksidasi elektroda aluminium menghasilkan ion Al³⁺. Penurunan berat elektroda Al meningkat dengan tegangan lebih tinggi, waktu yang lebih lama, dan jarak elektroda yang lebih dekat. Peningkatan pH terjadi seiring dengan tegangan dan waktu proses, namun jarak elektroda yang terlalu dekat dapat menghambat difusi ion. Tegangan tinggi menghasilkan gas yang membantu pengurangan TDS melalui flotasi partikel terlarut. Elektrolisis meningkatkan efisiensi pengolahan dengan mengurangi COD dan meningkatkan produksi metana, sementara kondisi optimal untuk penurunan BOD tercapai pada tegangan 16 volt, waktu 6 jam, dan jarak elektroda 4 cm, dengan pengurangan BOD hingga 72,73%.
