Abstract
This research aims to find out the effect of TED Talks as a teaching medium on students’ speaking skills (experimental study at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Tirtayasa). The researcher used a quantitative research method with a quasi-experimental. The research population consisted of XI grade students at SMAN 1 Tirtayasa, with a sample divided into an experimental group 30 students and a control group 30 students. Both groups took a pre-test in the first meeting, followed by treatment for the experimental class using TED Talks videos during the next three meetings, and finally a post-test for both classes. The research instruments used were pre-test and post-test speaking tests, supported by content validity and inter-rater reliability tests. After testing the validity and reliability of the instruments, the data were analyzed using normality test, homogeneity test, and hypothesis test (t-test). The results showed that the average pre-test score of the experimental class was 58.47, which increased to 79.73 after being taught using TED Talks videos, while the control class only increased from 46.73 to 55.77. The results of the independent samples t-test showed a significance value (Sig. 1-tailed) of 0.024 < 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. It can be concluded that the use of TED Talks YouTube videos has a significant effect on students' speaking skills. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to use TED Talks as an interesting and effective learning medium to improve students' speaking skills.
