Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Duolingo application on the grammar mastery of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Pandeglang. This research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental, pre-test/post-test control group design. The sample consisted of two classes, X-1 as the experimental group (n=36) which used the Duolingo application, and X-2 as the control group (n=36) which used the Wayground application. The instrument used was a multiple-choice grammar test administered as a pre-test and post-test. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an Independent Samples T-Test. The results of the t-test on the post-test scores showed that the use of Duolingo was significantly more effective than Wayground, with a significance value of .007 (p < 0.05) in favor of the experimental group. This finding suggests that Duolingo’s pedagogical model, which emphasizes self-paced learning and learner autonomy, was significantly more effective than the competitive, teacher-paced model of Wayground application for improving students' grammar mastery. The study concludes that Duolingo is a potent pedagogical resource that can significantly contribute to students' grammar acquisition within a blended learning framework.
