Abstract
Water pollution caused by heavy metals such as copper (Cu) poses a major environmental concern due to its toxic, persistent, and bioaccumulative nature. Phytoremediation offers an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach for mitigating heavy metal contamination. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of two pothos varieties, golden pothos and lemon pothos, in remediating Cu-contaminated water through a hydroponic system over a 21-day period. The research was conducted from April to June 2025 using a factorial Randomized Block Design consisting of two factors: plant variety and seven concentrations of CuSO₄.5H₂O (0–150 mg/L). The observed parameters included plant growth, solution pH, Cu concentration before and after phytoremediation, absorption effectiveness, and morphological changes.The results indicated that both pothos varieties were capable of reducing Cu concentrations in the solution, demonstrating their potential as phytoremediators. However, statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between golden pothos and lemon pothos in their Cu absorption effectiveness. Both varieties exhibited similar response patterns across all concentration levels tested. Additionally, no interaction was found between plant variety and Cu concentration, suggesting that the absorption pattern remained consistent for both varieties under all treatments. These findings confirm that pothos plants, regardless of variety, can serve as effective, accessible, and eco-friendly phytoremediators for reducing Cu levels in contaminated water. | Additional Information: | Pencemaran air akibat logam berat seperti tembaga (Cu) merupakan permasalahan lingkungan yang serius karena bersifat toksik, persisten, dan mudah terakumulasi dalam organisme hidup. Fitoremediasi menjadi salah satu pendekatan yang ramah lingkungan, ekonomis, dan aplikatif dalam mengatasi pencemaran logam berat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi potensi dua varietas sirih gading, yaitu sirih gading emas dan sirih gading lemon, dalam meremediasi air yang terkontaminasi Cu melalui sistem hidroponik selama periode 21 hari. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan April hingga Juni 2025 dengan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) faktorial yang terdiri atas dua faktor, yaitu varietas tanaman dan tujuh tingkat konsentrasi CuSO₄·5H₂O (0–150 mg/L). Parameter yang diamati meliputi pertumbuhan tanaman, pH larutan, konsentrasi Cu sebelum dan sesudah proses fitoremediasi, efektivitas penyerapan Cu, serta perubahan morfologi tanaman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua varietas sirih gading mampu menurunkan konsentrasi Cu dalam larutan, sehingga menunjukkan potensinya sebagai tanaman fitoremediator. Namun, hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan bahwa tidak terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara sirih gading emas dan sirih gading lemon dalam efektivitas penyerapan Cu. Kedua varietas menunjukkan pola respons yang serupa pada seluruh tingkat konsentrasi yang diuji. Selain itu, tidak ditemukan adanya interaksi antara varietas tanaman dan konsentrasi Cu, yang mengindikasikan bahwa pola penyerapan Cu pada kedua varietas tetap konsisten pada seluruh perlakuan.
