Abstract

Background. Respiratory disorders are among the most serious occupational diseases and remain a leading cause of worker mortality globally, including in Indonesia. Compliance with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) masks plays a key role in preventing respiratory symptoms caused by exposure to dust and other occupational risk factors. However, workers’ compliance with mask usage is often less than optimal, influenced by factors such as knowledge, attitudes, PPE availability, and workplace conditions. This study at PT. Shinko Plantech focuses on the relationship between PPE mask compliance and respiratory symptoms, aiming to provide a clear picture of workers’ health conditions in the Banten region. The findings serve as a basis for companies and stakeholders to take appropriate preventive actions to improve PPE compliance and reduce respiratory risks. Methods The research employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional study design. A total of 130 workers were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews using a questionnaire on compliance with the use of respiratory protective equipment (masks) and a respiratory disorder questionnaire (ATS-DLD-78-A). Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods with the chi-square test at a significance level of 0.05. Results The chi-square test results showed no significant association between compliance with the use of respiratory protective equipment (masks) and symptoms of respiratory disorders (p = 0.846; OR = 1.073; 95% CI: 0.529–2.177). The majority of respondents demonstrated a high level of compliance in mask usage, supported by the implementation of sanctions, supervision, and reward systems in the workplace. In addition, most workers did not experience symptoms of respiratory disorders. Conclusion Compliance with the use of PPE masks at PT. Shinko Plantech does not show a significant association with respiratory symptoms among workers. Nevertheless, ongoing enforcement of supervision, sanctions, and reward mechanisms remains essential to promote safe workplace behavior and reduce health risks in industrial environments.
