Abstract
The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Society 5.0 era has transformed various aspects of life, particularly in education. ChatGPT, an AI based language model developed by OpenAI, has gained popularity among students for assisting in language learning, including translation. This research investigates the perceptions of second-semester students in the English Department at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University regarding the use of ChatGPT as a learning tool for English translation. This study used survey study research design. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The questionnaire employed a Likert scale to assess students' attitudes, while interviews provided deeper insights into their experiences using ChatGPT in translation-related tasks. The findings show that students generally have a positive perception of ChatGPT, highlighting its accessibility, speed, and usefulness in completing translation assignments. However, some expressed concerns about its accuracy, cultural limitations, and potential to reduce students' motivation for learning manual translation skills. A majority agreed that ChatGPT is helpful as a supporting tool but not a complete replacement for dictionaries or human guidance. In conclusion, ChatGPT is viewed as a beneficial yet supplementary resource in the context of translation learning. The study suggests that educators and learners should integrate AI tools like ChatGPT thoughtfully, balancing them with traditional learning methods to enhance language competence without undermining independent skill development.
