Abstract
PT Krakatau Baja Industri is a pioneer in the national steel industry and a subholding of PT Krakatau Steel, focusing on processing Hot Rolled Coils (HRC) into Cold Rolled products with an annual production capacity of 850,000 tons. One of the vital units in the production process is the Continuous Pickling Line (CPL), which cleans the surface of steel sheets from scale using hydrochloric acid (HCl) before further processing. Within this unit, centrifugal pumps in the heat exchanger system play a critical role in circulating the heated acid solution to maintain pickling efficiency. This internship aims to study the implementation of preventive maintenance and identify the factors causing damage to centrifugal pumps. Based on observations during the period from September 1 to October 1, 2025, routine maintenance is conducted by the mechanical team every two weeks. The scope of maintenance includes oil level checks, leakage inspections, and vibration monitoring to detect early signs of equipment failure. Data analysis of findings from September 2024 to September 2025 revealed 39 cases of equipment issues. Pareto chart analysis showed that the most dominant problem was leakage, accounting for 54.3% of total cases, specifically involving mechanical seal failures, gaskets, and rubber compensators. Fishbone diagram analysis indicated that damage was influenced by several factors, including the corrosive and abrasive nature of the fluid, high operating temperatures, and inconsistent maintenance scheduling. To improve system reliability, it is recommended to replace obsolete pumps, utilize compensators to reduce vibration, and strictly adhere to standard operating procedures (SOP).
