Abstract

This study aims to identify consumer acceptance of processed food products treated with electron beam irradiation technology in Indonesia, given the technology's potential to enhance food safety and security despite low public awareness. This quantitative study employed descriptive and comparative analysis, conducted online from May to July 2025, involving 386 valid respondents from across Indonesia selected through convenience sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire measuring five variables: Awareness, Perceived Risk, Perceived Benefit, Trust, and Consumer Acceptance. The results indicate a generally high level of consumer acceptance, primarily driven by high perceptions of benefits and strong trust, which successfully mitigated moderate perceived risks. However, consumer awareness remains low, with over half (54.7%) of respondents uncertain or unaware, marked by a significant gap between low technical knowledge of the irradiation process and high conceptual belief in its purpose and regulation. Furthermore, socio-demographic analysis revealed significant differences in acceptance based on age, education, and income, but not gender. Younger consumers (<45 years) were significantly more accepting than older consumers (45-64 years). Uniquely, acceptance was highest among high school graduates and tended to decrease with higher levels of education and income, suggesting a more critical stance among more educated and affluent consumers. These findings provide a foundational understanding for developing targeted educational and marketing strategies to optimize the adoption of food irradiation technology in Indonesia.

Additional Information: Teknologi iradiasi merupakan metode pengolahan pangan yang berpotensi meningkatkan keamanan dan ketahanan pangan. Namun, implementasi teknologi ini secara lebih luas di Indonesia pada akhirnya bergantung pada tingkat penerimaan konsumen. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi tingkat kesadaran, persepsi, dan penerimaan konsumen terhadap produk pangan olahan yang diproses dengan teknologi iradiasi electron beam di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan analisis deskriptif dan komparatif. Survey online dilaksanakan pada periode Mei hingga Juli 2025, dengan melibatkan 386 responden dari berbagai wilayah di Indonesia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat penerimaan konsumen terhadap pangan iradiasi secara umum tergolong tinggi. Penerimaan tersebut terutama dipengaruhi oleh tingginya persepsi manfaat dan tingkat kepercayaan yang kuat, yang mampu mengimbangi persepsi risiko yang berada pada tingkat moderat. Namun demikian, tingkat kesadaran konsumen masih tergolong rendah, dengan lebih dari separuh responden (54,7%) menyatakan ragu atau tidak mengetahui keberadaan teknologi tersebut. Analisis sosio-demografi menunjukkan adanya perbedaan penerimaan yang signifikan berdasarkan usia, tingkat pendidikan, dan pendapatan, tetapi tidak berdasarkan jenis kelamin. Konsumen berusia di bawah 45 tahun menunjukkan tingkat penerimaan yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan kelompok usia yang lebih tua, sementara penerimaan tertinggi ditemukan pada lulusan sekolah menengah dan cenderung menurun seiring meningkatnya tingkat pendidikan dan pendapatan.
