Abstract
This study investigates the types and frequencies of flouting maxims and the implied meanings found in Jimmy O. Yang’s stand-up comedy “Best Dad Stories.” Using a qualitative directed content analysis approach, the data were collected from the performance transcript and analysed based on Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principle. The findings indicate that all four maxims are flouted in the performance, with the maxim of relevance appearing most frequently (22 utterances; 53,65%), followed by the maxim of quality (13 utterances; 31,70%), the maxim of manner (12 utterances; 29,26%), and the maxim of quantity (1o utterances; 24,39%). The implied meanings derived from these floutings revolve around four thematic categories: family expectations and Asian parenting, cultural contrasts between Asian and American values, immigrant identity and stereotypes, and language- and generation-related misunderstandings. These themes highlight the comedian’s negotiation of cultural identity and his subtle critique of immigrant experiences. The study also offers implications for high school English classes, suggesting that stand-up comedy can serve as an engaging medium for teaching implied meaning and developing students’ listening and inferencing skills.

| Additional Information: | Studi ini menyelidiki jenis dan frekuensi pelanggaran maksim serta makna tersirat yang ditemukan dalam komedi tunggal Jimmy O. Yang berjudul “Best Dad Stories.” Menggunakan pendekatan analisis konten terarah kualitatif, data dikumpulkan dari transkrip pertunjukan dan dianalisis berdasarkan Prinsip Kerja Sama Grice (1975). Temuan menunjukkan bahwa keempat maksim dilanggar dalam pertunjukan tersebut, dengan maksim relevansi muncul paling sering (22 ucapan; 53,65%), diikuti oleh maksim kualitas (13 ucapan; 31,70%), maksim cara (12 ucapan; 29,26%), dan maksim kuantitas (10 ucapan; 24,39%). Makna tersirat yang berasal dari pelanggaran ini berkisar pada empat kategori tematik: harapan keluarga dan pola pengasuhan anak Asia, kontras budaya antara nilai-nilai Asia dan Amerika, identitas imigran dan stereotip, serta kesalahpahaman terkait bahasa dan generasi. Tema-tema ini menyoroti bagaimana komedian tersebut menegosiasikan identitas budaya dan kritiknya yang halus terhadap pengalaman imigran.
