Abstract
The increase in global demand for manganese has driven the growth of the manganese industry as a raw material for NMC battery cathodes. Manganese deposits in Indonesia are spread across various regions, one of which is Trenggalek in East Java Province. In 2023, Indonesia is estimated to have manganese ore reserves of around 131 million tons. Trenggalek manganese ore generally has a grade of >45% and is categorized as medium-grade manganese ore with impurities such as Ca, Si, Fe, and Al. The presence of silica in the ore is very difficult to remove due to its stable chemical properties, low solubility, and tendency to form strong bonds with other minerals. Therefore, it is necessary to remove silica elements through an alkali fusion process to break the strong chemical bonds of silica into sodium silica, which is soluble in the water leaching process. This study conducted an alkali fusion process with variations in fusion temperature, fusion time, and the mass ratio of ore to fusion agent, followed by a water leaching process to obtain filtrate and residue. The optimum conditions obtained in the combined alkali fusion and water leaching process were at a temperature of 850 °C for 180 minutes with a ratio of 1:2. The water leaching residue underwent a reduction and acid leaching process, which resulted in a Mn extraction percentage of 74.77%. The results showed that the combined process of alkali fusion and water leaching effectively reduced the silica content in manganese ore, with a Si extraction percentage of 49.27% in the water leaching filtrate. The manganese sulfate solution produced met the minimum Mn concentration as a battery specification standard, namely 31.8% Mn, but the impurity content (Ca at 3,595.33 ppm, Mg at 2,200.79 ppm, and Na at 76,323.6 ppm) did not meet the requirements.
