Abstract

This research investigates the use of politeness strategies in presentations by ninth-grade students at SMPIT Al Husein. Effective communication in education requires not only clarity but also social appropriateness, yet the application of politeness by adolescent learners in formal settings is under-researched. This study aims to identify the types of politeness strategies employed by students and to analyze the factors influencing their choices. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and interviews, and analyzed based on Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory. The findings reveal that students utilized all four super-strategies: Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record. Positive Politeness was the most dominant strategy, used to build solidarity and rapport. The choice of strategy was significantly influenced by the sociological factors of Power (P), Social Distance (D), and Rank of Imposition (R). This study concludes that students strategically navigate communicative demands, balancing informational clarity with interpersonal harmony, with a notable preference for strategies that reinforce in-group solidarity. The results contribute to the fields of pragmatics and language education by detailing the pragmatic competence of young learners in a formal classroom context.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini mengkaji penggunaan strategi kesantunan dalam presentasi oleh siswa kelas sembilan (kelas IX) di SMPIT Al Husein. Komunikasi yang efektif dalam pendidikan tidak hanya menuntut kejelasan tetapi juga kepatutan sosial, namun penerapan kesantunan oleh pembelajar remaja dalam situasi formal masih jarang diteliti. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis strategi kesantunan yang digunakan oleh siswa dan menganalisis faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi pilihan mereka. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, kuesioner, dan wawancara, serta dianalisis berdasarkan teori kesantunan Brown dan Levinson (1987). Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa siswa menggunakan keempat strategi utama (super-strategies): Bald on Record (tanpa basa-basi), Positive Politeness (kesantunan positif), Negative Politeness (kesantunan negatif), dan Off-Record (tersamar). Kesantunan Positif menjadi strategi yang paling dominan, digunakan untuk membangun solidaritas dan hubungan baik (rapport). Pemilihan strategi tersebut dipengaruhi secara signifikan oleh faktor sosiologis yaitu Kekuasaan (Power/P), Jarak Sosial (Social Distance/D), dan Tingkat Pembebanan (Rank of Imposition/R). Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa siswa secara strategis menavigasi tuntutan komunikasi, menyeimbangkan kejelasan informasi dengan keharmonisan interpersonal, dengan kecenderungan yang jelas terhadap strategi yang memperkuat solidaritas sesama kelompok (in-group). Hasil penelitian ini berkontribusi pada bidang pragmatik dan pendidikan bahasa dengan merinci kompetensi pragmatik pembelajar muda dalam konteks kelas formal.
