Abstract

This research aims to investigate the influence of pre-reading tasks on students’ reading comprehension at the ninth grade of SMPN 3 Tangerang Selatan. The study is motivated by the fact that many students face difficulties in understanding reading texts, especially in identifying main ideas, making inferences, and comprehending detailed information. Pre-reading tasks are considered as one of the effective strategies to activate students’ background knowledge, increase motivation, and provide contextual support before they engage with the actual text. This research employed a quantitative method using an experimental design. The population consisted of ninth-grade students, while two classes were chosen as samples, one as the experimental group and the other as the control group. The experimental group was taught using pre-reading tasks such as predicting, brainstorming, and discussing related topics, while the control group was taught without such activities. The data were collected through a reading comprehension test administered before and after the treatment. The results revealed that the experimental group achieved significantly higher scores than the control group. This indicates that the use of pre reading tasks has a positive and significant influence on students’ reading comprehension. Therefore, it can be concluded that integrating pre-reading activities into teaching practices helps students to comprehend reading materials more effectively and contributes to improving their overall reading skills. Pre-reading task, reading comprehension, teaching strategy, ninth- grade students.
