Abstract

Steel pipes are critical components in oil and gas industrial piping systems that operate under extreme conditions. The quality of welded joints is a crucial factor, as defects may lead to leakage or catastrophic failure; therefore, efficient and accurate inspection methods are essential. Magnetic Induction Tomography (MIT) is selected as an alternative inspection technique due to its advantages over Radiography Testing (RT), including increased safety because it does not use radiation, lower operational costs, and higher efficiency. This study employs an MIT sensor system consisting of a sensor unit, a data acquisition system (DAS), and a computer. The inspection process is conducted by measuring the impedance of steel pipes with variations in material type (SS400, ASTM A106 Grade B, and Stainless Steel 316) and weld joint configurations (longitudinal and circumferential). Impedance data are analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to visualize the separation between defect and non-defect clusters. The impedance results show that SS400 has the highest value at 0.02277 Ohm, followed by ASTM A106 Grade B at 0.01245 Ohm, and Stainless Steel 316 at 0.01088 Ohm. The optimum frequency range is identified at 12,000–20,000 Hz. Additionally, both longitudinal and circumferential weld joints exhibit their own effectiveness, with respective advantages and limitations according to their structural characteristics. Thus, the study demonstrates that MIT sensors hold strong potential as a promising alternative method for preventive inspection of weld defects in steel pipes within the oil and gas industry.
